Digital Eye Strain Relief with Ayurveda
What is digital eye strain?
Digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, refers to a group of eye and vision-related problems resulting from prolonged use of digital screens, such as computers, smartphones, and tablets. With increasing reliance on digital devices for work, entertainment and communication, more people are experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain, which can affect overall eye health. It’s important to be aware of symptoms of such eye strain and take steps to mitigate the effects of prolonged screen time on our eyes.
Causes of digital eye strain
- Prolonged screen time: Staring at screens for extended periods without breaks can strain the eye muscles and lead to fatigue.
- Poor lighting: Working in environments with inadequate lighting or glare from screens can contribute to eye strain.
- Improper screen distance: Sitting too close or too far from the screen can cause our eyes to work harder, leading to discomfort.
- Uncorrected vision problems: Refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can worsen digital eye strain if not properly corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
- Infrequent blinking: When focused on a screen, we tend to blink less often, leading to dry eyes and discomfort.
Common symptoms of digital eye strain
- Eye discomfort or irritation
- Blurred vision
- Dry eyes
- Headaches
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Difficulty focusing
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Watery eyes
Ayurvedic perspective on digital eye strain
In Ayurveda, eye health is closely connected to the Pitta dosha, which governs heat, light, and vision. An imbalance in Pitta, particularly the subdosha Alochaka Pitta, which is responsible for visual perception, can lead to eye strain and discomfort. Ayurveda emphasises the importance of maintaining balance in the doshas and adopting eye care practices to protect and nourish the eyes.
Managing digital eye strain with Ayurveda
- Triphala eye wash: A cooled decoction of Triphala is used to rinse the eyes. This helps soothe and cleanse the eyes, providing eye strain relief and promoting eye health.
- Netra Tarpana (Eye rejuvenation therapy): This Ayurvedic therapy involves bathing the eyes in medicated ghee. It nourishes and strengthens the eye tissues, alleviates dryness, and improves overall vision.
- Herbal remedies: Ayurvedic herbs like Amalaki (Indian gooseberry), Brahmi, and Gotu Kola are known for their benefits in supporting eye health and reducing strain.
- Diet and hydration: Consume Pitta-pacifying diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins A and C, and omega-3 fatty acids to help protect the eyes from strain. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to maintain eye moisture.
- Palming: This simple technique involves rubbing the palms (ensure hands are clean) together to generate heat and then placing them over the closed eyes. The warmth and darkness help relax the eye muscles and reduce strain.
- Ghee application: Apply a small amount of warm ghee to the eyelids before bed to help nourish and lubricate the eyes, providing relief from dryness and irritation.
