Eczema Management with Ayurveda
What is eczema?
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterised by red, itchy, and inflamed skin. It can occur at any age but is most commonly seen in children. Eczema can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, impacting the quality of life for those affected. Understanding its causes and finding effective treatments is essential for eczema management.
Causes of eczema
While the exact cause of eczema is unknown, it is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Common triggers include:
- Allergens (pollen, pet dander, dust mites)
- Irritants (soaps, detergents, synthetic fabrics)
- Stress
- Hormonal changes
- Climate changes
Symptoms of eczema
- Dry, sensitive skin
- Intense itching
- Red and inflamed patches
- Rough, leathery, or scaly patches
- Oozing or crusting of the skin
- Areas of swelling
Ayurvedic perspective on eczema
In Ayurveda, eczema is referred to as Vicharchika and is considered to be caused by an imbalance in the body’s doshas, primarily Pitta and Kapha. The condition arises from the accumulation of toxins (Ama) and impaired digestive fire (Agni), leading to inflammation and skin issues.
Managing eczema with Ayurveda
- Herbal remedies: Eczema can be relieved with herbs like neem, turmeric and aloe vera. These herbs help reduce inflammation, detoxify the skin and promote healing, forming the basis of natural remedies for eczema.
- Dietary adjustments: Follow a Pitta-pacifying diet. Eat cooling foods like cucumbers and leafy greens, and drink plenty of water. Avoid spicy, fried, and processed foods. This diet is crucial for managing Pitta and Kapha imbalance eczema.
- Panchakarma therapy: Detox treatment that helps remove toxins from the body, improving skin health and overall wellness. Panchakarma for eczema is a highly recommended Ayurvedic practice.
- Topical applications: Apply herbal pastes and oils, such as coconut and sesame, or a mixture of sandalwood and turmeric to soothe irritated skin and reduce itching. These Ayurvedic skincare practices provide effective eczema relief.
- Bathing solutions: Add neem leaves or oatmeal to bath water to relieve itching and inflammation, enhancing natural skin healing.
- Lifestyle modifications: Manage stress through yoga, meditation and adequate sleep to manage eczema flare-ups.
