Backache Management with Ayurveda
What is sinus issues?
Sinus issues, also known as sinusitis, involve the inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Healthy sinuses are normally filled with air, but when they become blocked and accumulate fluid, germs can grow and cause a sinus infection. Sinusitis can be acute (lasting up to four weeks) or chronic (persisting for more than 12 weeks despite treatment efforts).
Common causes of sinus issues
- Infections: Viral, bacterial or fungal infections can lead to sinusitis.
- Allergies: Allergic reactions like hay fever can cause sinus inflammation.
- Nasal polyps: Growths in the nasal passages can block the sinuses.
- Deviated septum: A shift in the nasal cavity can restrict or block sinus passages.
- Respiratory tract infections: Colds and other respiratory tract infections can inflame and thicken sinus membranes.
Symptoms of sinus issues
- Facial pain or pressure
- Nasal congestion
- Thick nasal discharge
- Reduced sense of smell and taste
- Headache
- Fever
- Bad breath
- Fatigue
Ayurvedic perspective on sinus issues
In Ayurveda, sinus issues are often linked to an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, which governs the structure and fluid balance in the body. When Kapha becomes aggravated, it can lead to excess mucus production and blockages in the sinus passages. Vata and Pitta imbalances can also contribute to sinus problems by causing dryness and inflammation.
Managing sinus issues with Ayurveda
- Herbal remedies: Herbs like holy basil (reduces inflammation and fights infections), turmeric (anti-inflammatory and antioxidant), ginger (reduces congestion and improves sinus drainage) and liquorice root (soothes mucous membranes) can alleviate sinus problems.
- Nasyam (nasal therapy): Medicated oils or herbal decoctions administered through the nasal passages can help clear congestion, reduce inflammation and balance the doshas.
- Steam inhalation: Inhale steam infused with essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint can help open the nasal passages and alleviate sinus congestion.
- Diet and lifestyle changes: Follow a Kapha-pacifying diet, which includes warm, light, and easily digestible foods, can help manage sinus problems. Avoiding cold food and drinks, dairy products and processed foods is also helpful.
- Pranayama (breathing exercises): Practise breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) can help improve airflow through the nasal passages and reduce congestion.
- Jala neti (nasal irrigation): Use a neti pot to flush out the nasal passages with saline water can help remove mucus and allergens, providing relief from sinus congestion.
