THE THREE DOSHAS

In Ayurveda, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, predominantly known as the three doshas are the regulating forces or energies of nature, which together comprise the universal life force. The Sanskrit term, Ayurveda, which translates to ‘knowledge of Life’, is one among the oldest holistic healing system and its principles emphasize the importance of maintaining equilibrium between our internal and external worlds through the health and balance between the mind, the body and the spirit.

In ayurvedic medicine key to total wellness, is achieved by harmonizing the three doshas. Each dosha is a combination of the great elements of nature; space or ether, air, fire, water, and earth. Vata is the combination of ether and air, pitta of fire and water and Kapha of earth and water. Knowing the constituents of these doshas and the effects they produce as a whole, a person’s physical and spiritual features can be determined; his nature, individual composition, comestibles, etc. These doshas are present in different combinations in each individual which are uniquely determined at the time of birth. Either two of them may be in abundance or a particular dosha might stand out. Various external factors; age, season, diet etc, continuously affect the proportion of doshas as life moves forward. Nevertheless through Ayurveda natural levels of doshas can be retained.

VATA DOSHA

Vata dosha is all about energy, excitement, and enthusiasm in addition to being physically and mentally active with a free-flowing spirit combined with flexibility and creativity. They tend to be thin and lanky and feel cold often. When imbalanced, they are affected with anxiety, fear and health issues such as constipation. Fluctuations in their zeal, appetite, and mood arise due to the influence of the air element which leads to eating and sleeping disorders. Hydration, consumption of root vegetables along with warm and creamy drinks helps in nourishment and grounding for those with Vata imbalance.

PITTA DOSHA

People with attributes of pitta dosha are generally strong, extreme and irascible with a medium built and freckled skin due to the influence of the fire element. They are born leaders with the ability to master new skills and techniques with great ease which can adversely affect their relationship with those who are slow in comprehension. They tend to be busy and ambitious and have a high affinity for food and challenges. Pitta imbalance leads to anger, burnout, skin irritation and anger. Consumption of sweet fruits, coconut water and plenty of grains while avoiding hot and spicy food helps in balancing pitta dosha.

KAPHA DOSHA

Kapha types are the ones who are naturally athletic and strongly built with a calm, loyal and compassionate nature. Moreover, they are very systematic and follow a static routine in both their professional and personal lives. When imbalanced they can become jealous, demotivated or even gain weight. Plenty of exercise along with meditation and breathwork helps in balancing Kapha levels. Consumption of fruits and vegetables while avoiding food rich in carbs also helps in maintaining Kapha imbalance.
